Pittsburgh airport to Downtown: five transport options
Published

Travelers landing at Pittsburgh International Airport can reach Downtown by reserved private car, app ride, licensed taxi, the 28X Airport Flyer, or rental car. Choose among those five formats by passenger and bag fit, whether you want to drive and park, how you will reach a Downtown hotel entrance versus an Oakland hospital or campus door, and whether you want a written price before you leave the terminal. This page is an unranked format comparison, not a ranked list of companies.
The airport lists ground-transport options, including app pickup, taxi, bus, permitted operators, and rental companies, on PIT ground transportation. An airport listing is not an endorsement or a ranking of operators.
The terminal roadways changed with the transformed PIT project. Use current signs rather than old construction meeting notes. Official roadway context is on transformed PIT roadways. For a reserved private car, follow the meeting location, vehicle description, and chauffeur contact on your confirmation. Posted app and bus points apply to those formats; they do not, by themselves, tell you where a reserved car will meet you.
If you want a reserved sedan, SUV, S-Class, or Sprinter, request an itinerary quote on PIT to Downtown car service or the Pittsburgh airport car service page. Hourly charter, when you want the car held for extra stops, is estimated at $120, $150, $230, and $240 per hour with a three-hour minimum ($360, $440, $690, and $710). Waiting during that reserved hourly block is included. A delayed landing does not convert a one-way transfer into hourly service. See rates.
| Format | Useful fit | Arrangements to check | Destination and parking responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reserved private car | Useful when you want a confirmed vehicle class, luggage help, a named Downtown or Oakland entrance, and a written price before you ride. Planning limits are sedan 3/3, SUV 6/6, and Sprinter 12/12, subject to the assigned configuration. Groups above 12 need a coordinated quote. | Book ahead with flight number, passenger and bag counts, child-seat or mobility notes, and the exact drop-off door. Confirm pickup location, wait policy, cancellation terms, and invoices on the quote. Meeting instructions come from the assigned operator. See airport transfers and rates. | The chauffeur handles driving and parking for the reserved itinerary. You meet at the confirmed point with the details you provided. Quoted prices include chauffeur gratuity and applicable service and card fees. On hourly charter, waiting during the reserved block is included; overtime, tolls, parking, and airport fees are confirmed on the quote. A one-way transfer can include agreed stops or wait when those items are on the quote. |
| App ride | Useful for on-demand trips when you can walk to the posted app zone with your bags and are comfortable confirming the vehicle and price in the app. | PIT lists Uber and Lyft pickup across the road from Door 7 on the Ground Level. Follow current airport signs and the app pin. Confirm the vehicle plate in the app before you load bags. See PIT ground transportation. | You handle the walk to the posted zone, the app account, and the app’s price and cancellation terms. Enter the hotel or office entrance as the destination in the app so the driver has a named curb. A reserved car can be booked with that same entrance already on the itinerary and a written price before you land. |
| Licensed taxi | Useful when you want a dispatched taxicab from the airport taxi point without booking a private car in advance. Vehicle size, luggage space, and payment rules vary by cab. | Use the taxi instructions and stand posted at the airport rather than a private-car or rideshare pin. Confirm the destination address, estimated fare method, and payment with the driver before you leave the curb. PIT lists permitted ground-transport operators on PIT ground transportation. | You are responsible for the taxi fare, extra stops, and telling the driver the exact Downtown hotel or office entrance. Confirm current taxi pricing at the stand; this page does not publish a taxi fare table. |
| 28X Airport Flyer | Useful when you can handle your own bags on a public bus, want a posted fare, and are going to Downtown or Oakland stops on the 28X rather than a hotel porte-cochere. Passengers take priority over bags. | PIT places the 28X outside Door 9 on the Ground Level. PRT lists a $2.75 one-way fare, Downtown and Oakland service, and passenger responsibility for luggage. Confirm current fare, payment, accessibility, and the timetable with PRT before you travel: PRT airport service and the 28X timetable (PDF). | You board with your own bags, pay the current PRT fare, and walk from the bus stop to the hotel, office, or campus entrance. The airport parking-lot shuttle is a parking connection, not a Downtown transfer. |
| Rental car | Useful when you want to drive yourself after landing, make extra stops on your own schedule, or continue beyond Downtown without a chauffeur. You take on parking, fuel, and driving in tunnel and event traffic. | Rental counters and pickup are part of the airport ground-transportation center. Follow current airport signs and the rental company’s instructions, and confirm rates, hours, and vehicle availability with the rental company. See PIT ground transportation center. | You drive, navigate, and pay parking at the hotel, garage, or campus. Airport parking itself is a PIT product with its own shuttles; see PIT parking. Hotel courtesy cars exist only if the hotel confirms coverage for your destination. |
Current PIT pickup: bus, app, taxi, rental, and assigned car
The transformed terminal changed how ground transport is signed and how vehicles reach the curb. Start with posted wayfinding, then match the mode you chose. Official pages: PIT ground transportation and transformed PIT roadways.
App rides: PIT lists Uber and Lyft pickup across the road from Door 7 on the Ground Level. Licensed taxis use the posted taxi point. The 28X is outside Door 9 on that level. Rental customers use the ground-transportation center. Those posted points belong to those formats.
Reserved private car: follow the meeting location, vehicle description, and chauffeur contact on your confirmation. The assigned operator may send a named door, a commercial curb, or another posted point. App and bus door numbers are useful only if you chose those formats; they do not, by themselves, establish the private-car curb.
Downtown hotels versus Oakland hospital and campus entrances
Downtown hotel drop-offs need the property name and the entrance or porte-cochere, not only “Downtown.” Grant Street offices, Market Square, the convention-center hotels, and Cultural District venues each have different legal stopping points. Event nights at PPG Paints Arena, PNC Park, and Acrisure Stadium can change the last block. Give the hotel or building so the chauffeur can confirm a curb that is actually open.
Oakland is a different last-mile problem. UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Montefiore, Magee-Womens, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon have separate building entrances and loading rules. Ask for the tower name, clinic, or campus building. Patient families and campus visitors still need that named door even when they are traveling from the same terminal as Downtown hotel guests. For reserved-car quotes, use PIT to Downtown or, when the drop-off is a campus or hospital, PIT to Oakland.
Tell the operator about mobility needs, extra bags, child seats, and whether anyone needs time after an appointment. That is entrance and vehicle-fit planning, not medical advice and not a wheelchair-service promise. Private-car planning limits remain sedan 3/3, SUV 6/6, and Sprinter 12/12 unless a coordinated quote covers a larger group.
Booking checklist
Use this list for a reserved car. For bus, taxi, app, or rental, swap in the matching official instruction linked above. A written private-car quote is available from online booking.
- Flight number, date, and a realistic ready time after landing, including extra time for an international arrival if needed.
- Passenger count and bag count, checked against sedan 3/3, SUV 6/6, or Sprinter 12/12 planning limits, or a coordinated quote above 12.
- Exact Downtown hotel or Oakland building entrance, plus any extra stops.
- Child seats, mobility notes, and amenities to confirm on the assigned vehicle. This is not medical transport.
- Return or wait plans. A transfer can include an agreed wait; book hourly if you want the vehicle held. A delayed flight does not by itself move a one-way transfer onto hourly charter.
- Written price, including chauffeur gratuity and applicable service and card fees, plus confirmation of tolls, parking, airport fees, cancellation, and refund terms.
